The overwhelming majority of APS employees are honest and committed to public service. However, as highlighted in the ASIO Director-General's Annual Threat Assessment, espionage and insider threats remain among one of the most serious risks facing government.

In this challenging environment, and knowing how time-poor staff can be, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) took a creative approach raising awareness of insider threats. The result, a compelling, true crime inspired video series developed in house for their 2024 Security, Integrity and Fraud Awareness week. Inside Job is an award winning exclusive true crime series that draws on the popularity of gritty, crime-focused stories.

There are 5 episodes in the series, each inspired by real events. The format of the series blends dramatic voiceovers, presenter led narratives, suspenseful soundtracks, and animated reenactments with silhouetted characters – drawing employees into a world of misdeeds, missteps, and mistakes revealing how sometimes trusted insiders can be caught out thanks to the strength of integrity systems and pro-integrity culture

From a harmless after-work social gathering that goes horribly wrong to a career risked on a dangerous gamble, Inside Job explores how everyday scenarios can spiral into serious integrity breaches.

By turning real life case studies into a high-quality micro learning experience, the ATO successfully captured attention, sparked conversations and reinforced the message that the greatest risks aren’t always external, they can come from within.
