APS Academy Campuses
The APSC is partnering with universities in regional areas to deliver APS entry-level digital and data programs into their communities.
APS Academy Campuses are an Australian Government policy initiative to address data and digital skills shortages in the APS by accessing talent and capability in regional Australia.
APS Academy Campuses enable Australians looking for a career change and students in regional areas the opportunity to build their skills in data and digital roles in the APS, without having to leave their communities.
It is a pilot program established by the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) in partnership with regional universities:
- The University of Newcastle (Newcastle, NSW)
- James Cook University (Townsville, QLD)
The importance of data and digital
The Australian Government is facing critical skill shortages in ICT, digital and data roles. 90% of this expertise is outside Canberra, but the APS offers 76% of data and 86% of digital roles in the ACT. The APS Academy Campuses allow the APS to hire and develop more data and digital talent for the APS while accessing these regional labour markets.
APS Academy Campuses support you to learn
Agencies who recruit for entry-level roles outside Canberra report more success when they give new staff a great experience and support as they enter the APS. APS Academy Campuses include additional support for agencies and their entry level program participants in addition to regular program support. This includes:
- A Campus Supervisor to provide on-site pastoral care and support for all Campus entry level staff.
- The Supervisor Community of Practice is a library of support materials and a platform for supervisors to work together and grow.
- Opportunities for participants to join Campus projects, work together and develop innovative solutions to problems.
- Experienced APS staff to work alongside entry-level program participants on-site.
APS Academy Campuses provide opportunities for entry-level program participants to work with their peers across the APS, higher education and industry.
Working at an APS Academy Campus
APS Academy Campuses are supported by the Australian Government Data and Digital Programs, run by the APSC under its Career Pathways initiative. These offer flexible data and digital training and entry-level employment opportunities in the APS, including paid apprentice, cadet and intern programs.
The Data and Digital Cadet programs are for university students who have:
- completed their first year of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a data or digital related field
- have at least one year remaining.
Successful applicants can excel in a data or digital career in the APS while completing their university degree.
These programs are also available without the additional support provided by an APS Academy Campus.
How to place entry level participants at Academy Campuses?
Agencies can select data and digital candidates from APSC managed merit pools to work from APS Academy Campuses.
