This Week in AI is a weekly mini podcast on Monday mornings hosted by Dr Paul Hubbard and Alex Roberts from the AI Delivery & Enablement Division (AIDE) at the Department of Finance. The series unpacks key developments across a wide range of domains, including new tech and models, robotics, workforce changes, cybersecurity, AI-related research, broader news domestically and internationally, and more.

This Week in AI discusses with frankness and transparency how AIDE thinks about AI and its implications for government and broader society. Audience questions are encouraged – acknowledging that the impacts of generative AI will touch all parts of society, and that all public servants both have a stake and will be affected.

Discussion items are curated by Alex from his weekly blog “Weekly Bits of AI Interest”, helping listeners to get across the most important details within a 15-minute segment. You can follow Alex and his blog via the Digital Profession. You can also learn more about AI at the AI CoLab here.

Hosts:

Paul:

Paul Hubbard is an Assistant Secretary in the AI Delivery & Enablement Division (AIDE) at the Department of Finance, and the co-head of the AI CoLab, a cross-sectoral initiative to accelerate innovation in the public sector.

Alex:

Alex Roberts is the director of the Enablement unit within AIDE. Alex has long had a passion for innovation and how government can do things differently (and hopefully better).

Benefits:

The series provides:

  • An accessible forum for public servants to be quickly informed about new AI developments each week (of which there are always plenty).
  • Visibility of perspectives from across disciplines and sectors on what these developments may mean for the public service, and what public servants should be considering in their policy and operational work.
  • An opportunity for staff to ask questions and prompt discussion – acknowledging the hosts are not the authority, but that staff views should be heard and discussed as every public servant has a stake.

Considerations

  • New videos will be added as they become available.
  • You need to have an APSLearn account to be able to access the content.
