MasterCraft Series - AI and Trust: Information, Misinformation and Disinformation
Generative AI is rapidly reshaping how information is produced and consumed, leaving citizens systematically vulnerable to misinformation. The risk is further audience fragmentation and a weakening social cohesion. Concern about misinformation is particularly high in Australia, where the rapid deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) is accelerating the scale, speed, and sophistication of misinformation.
Misinformation flourishes when there is high demand for information but insufficient verified evidence. A robust and sustainable news and information ecosystem is therefore a critical line of defence. Targeted investment in media literacy is necessary to strengthen public resilience. However, both are under considerable pressure. The news industry is fragmented, under-resourced, and struggling to adapt to a high-choice, platform-dominated environment in which advertising revenue and audience attention have shifted to digital platforms. Audiences are losing trust in mainstream news, turning away from it and seeking alternative sources such as influencers, social media and AI chatbots.
Drawing on leading research, this event* will outline 3 priority policy responses to address misinformation: strengthening platform regulation, rebuilding the integrity and capacity of the news ecosystem, and equipping citizens with the media literacy skills required to navigate an increasingly complex information environment.
*Please note this event will be recorded. You can view this video and other MasterCraft Series events here.
