Presenters
Danielle Wood
Danielle Wood is Chair of the Productivity Commission. Prior to joining the Commission, she was CEO of the Grattan Institute and Head of its Budgets and Government Program. During her time at Grattan, Danielle also held roles as member of the Australian Government’s Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce, the Parliamentary Budget Office Expert Advisory Committee, the Jobs and Skills Australia Consultative Forum and the Australia and New Zealand School of Government Research Committee.
Danielle previously worked in senior roles at the ACCC and at NERA Economic Consulting. She started her career as a graduate at the Productivity Commission. Danielle holds an Honours degree in Economics from the University of Adelaide and two Masters degrees, one in Economics and one in Competition Law, from the University of Melbourne.
Danielle is an Honorary Fellow and former President of the Economic Society of Australia and a Research Fellow of the Women’s Leadership Institute. She was the co-founder and first Chair of the Women in Economics Network. She is currently an ex-officio member of the Australian Government’s Competition Review Expert Advisory Panel.
Shane Johnson
Shane Johnson is the First Assistant Secretary of the Tax Analysis Division in the Department of the Treasury. The Division provides influential quantitative and economic advice on tax and social policy. Shane also serves as co-Head of the Australian Public Service Evaluation Profession.
Prior to joining the Tax Analysis Division, Shane was First Assistant Secretary of the Macroeconomic Analysis and Policy Division, which delivers macroeconomic policy advice, microdata analysis of economic trends and policy, and is home to the Australian Centre for Evaluation.
Shane has previously held senior roles at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, including supporting evaluation in the Indigenous Affairs Group and working with the Behavioural Economics Team of the Australian Government (BETA). He began his career as a graduate at the Treasury.
Shane holds an Honours degree in Economics from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the Australian National University.
Eleanor Williams
Eleanor is the Managing Director of the Australian Centre for Evaluation in the Commonwealth Department of Treasury. With over 20 years’ experience working with the Australian and Victorian public service, Eleanor has held senior executive roles in evaluation, research and strategic policy. She holds Masters level qualifications in Evaluation, Public Policy and management. Eleanor is the current Chair of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Evaluation Experts Group and founded the Australian Public Sector Evaluation Network in 2019.
Eleanor is also currently undertaking PhD research on evidence use in fast-paced policy contexts with supervisors at the University of Queensland and University College London. She has recently published articles on public sector capacity building and rapid evaluation methods.
