Lunch and Learn - Session 16: Using AI Tools for Better User Guidance and Product Operations
This session will showcase IP Australia’s IP First Response platform which is a pilot initiative designed to help users navigate the complexities of intellectual property enforcement. Josh Maher will share how his team is developing interactive, AI-supported tools that guide users through enforcement options.
The discussion will also explore broader AI opportunities emerging from this work, including chatbots, open access to authoritative content, and backend automation. Josh will reflect on how the platform has evolved, lessons learned along the way, and how user feedback and AI is shaping its future direction.

Josh Maher is the acting Director of IPAVentures at IP Australia. With a strong background in innovation and digital transformation, Josh is leading the team developing IP Australia’s IP First Response platform—a pilot initiative designed to simplify intellectual property enforcement for users. His work focuses on leveraging AI to improve user experience, streamline processes, and enhance accessibility across government platforms.
Josh is passionate about applying human-centred design and iterative development to deliver practical, scalable solutions. He has extensive experience in stakeholder engagement and policy alignment, ensuring that technology adoption meets both operational needs and regulatory standards. In this session, Josh will share insights from his team’s AI-driven venture and discuss the future of intelligent tools in public service delivery.

Daniel Parris
Daniel Parris is an Engagement Manager with GovAI, a whole-of-government program in the Department of Finance working to enable responsible and effective AI adoption across the Australian Public Service (APS). In his role, Daniel works with agencies to accelerate AI adoption through information sharing, capability building, and supporting cross-agency connections. He also oversees the APS AI Use Case Library, which is a central GovAI resource showcasing real-world AI applications in Government, promoting reuse, and fostering innovation across the public sector.
Before joining GovAI, Daniel worked across governance, sustainability, and policy settings. This included work on APS climate reporting, ESG research and methodology design for global investors, and academic research on sustainable finance and climate risk. Daniel has also facilitated group programs in diverse settings, from interactive public service workshops to immersive cultural experiences in remote Indigenous communities.
