Lunch and Learn Session 2: AI Safety, Security and Privacy – Foundations
This session* sets out the safety, security and privacy considerations that underpin responsible AI adoption across the Australian Government. It focuses on how strong policy, governance and technical controls enable agencies to confidently embrace AI while safeguarding public trust, sensitive information and government systems.
Participants will gain a foundational understanding of the core principles, expectations and practical guardrails that support safe and secure AI use. The session emphasises proportionate risk management, transparency and accountability, and shows how shared, coordinated approaches can reduce fragmentation and support responsible development of AI and adoption of generative AI in practice through case studies.
Designed for Australian Government staff, including general AI users and AI practitioners, this session provides a common baseline for engaging with AI safely and securely, and frames safety, security and privacy as enablers of trusted, sustainable AI use in government.

Presenter
Holly O'Connor, AI Technical Lead, Digital Transformation Agency
Holly has more than 20 years of experience working with data in government and research settings, and is now an AI Technical Lead at the DTA. She provides guidance and advice to help government teams design and deliver safe and secure AI solutions. Her career has included positions as a Data Analyst, Data Engineer and Data Scientist, giving her the hands-on expertise across the full data lifecycle, from collection and engineering through to advanced analytics and insights.
Her diverse background helps her see each side of the Rubik’s cube, balancing architectural constraints, good methodology, ethical concerns and strategic goals at the same time. A scientist at heart, with qualifications in mathematics, she brings a naturally analytical and curious mindset to her work.
Holly’s values align strongly with the Public Service. She has previously worked with agencies such as the Bureau of Statistic and Taxation Office, always focused on using data responsibly, protecting communities and improving outcomes for the Australian public.

Dr Nandita Sharma, from the Australian Government Digital Transformation Agency (DTA), is an experienced leader in driving data and AI initiatives across government, banking, private and research sectors. She has served on multiple national and international advisory boards on advanced analytics and AI.
With deep knowledge of AI recognised by her international publications, she is dedicated to helping government achieve greater success through the strategic adoption of advanced analytics and AI.
