Every year, approximately 6,000 skilled Australians transition from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) into civilian careers. Many seek to continue serving their country through the Australian Public Service (APS)—but navigating this career shift requires specialised support.
That's where VetPaths makes all the difference.
A Proven Pathway for Veterans
Now in its third successful year, VetPaths is a comprehensive 6-month program designed specifically for ex-service personnel entering the APS. Developed by the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) in 2022, this initiative has become a key talent pipeline, helping veterans translate their military experience into impactful public service careers.
On 18 November, the 2025 cohort was officially welcomed by senior leaders including Alison Frame (Secretary, Department of Veterans' Affairs), Charles McHardie (Services Australia), and Faye Liu (Assistant Commissioner, APS Academy). Participants from DVA, Services Australia, and the Digital Transformation Agency gathered to begin their transformation journey.
How the Program Works
The APS Academy partners with DVA to deliver the formal learning component of VetPaths, combining:
- Structured course delivery covering APS fundamentals
- Asynchronous learning opportunities for flexible skill development
- APS Craft training that builds foundational knowledge of government operations
- Peer networking with fellow veterans navigating similar transitions
