By the AI Capability team, APS Academy
Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work across the Australian Public Service - and you don't need to be a tech expert to get involved. The APS Academy has developed a range of AI learning options to help you build practical skills and confidence, no matter your starting point.
The hardest part is often knowing where to begin. So rather than listing everything at once, here's a guide based on where you're at right now.
‘I'm new to AI and not sure where to start’
Start with the APS AI Learning Pathway. It's your guided route from foundational concepts through to practical, everyday skills. It includes on-demand videos, bite-sized tips, live events and a regular newsletter to keep you current as AI evolves. You can move through it at your own pace - no pressure, no prerequisites.
‘I've got 10 minutes between meetings’
Try AI Bites - short, standalone videos that pull out key insights from longer webinars. Each one gives you a focused idea or skill you can apply straight away. They're designed for busy schedules and are a great way to build knowledge in small steps.
‘I want hands-on practice with other people’
Book into the AI Foundations for the APS session. This interactive session is open to APS–EL1 staff and covers AI fundamentals, effective prompting, reviewing AI outputs and using AI safely in the workplace. It's practical, collaborative and designed to build real confidence.
‘I'd like to go deeper in my own time’
Explore the AI Lunch and Learn library - a collection of recorded MasterCraft and Lunch and Learn sessions led by practitioners. They cover foundational knowledge and real-world applications of AI across government. Watch at your own pace, whenever it suits you.
‘I'm a senior leader (EL2 or SES)’
There are dedicated resources designed for the strategic and leadership dimensions of AI:
- SES AI Learning Pathway - covers AI basics through to leading teams through adoption, with facilitator-led workshops, a Vodcast, videos and a newsletter.
- AI Foundations for Senior Leaders - a hands-on workshop covering prompting strategies, use cases, risks and government guardrails.
- SES AI Key Resources Suite - a self-directed learning package developed with the Department of Finance and the Digital Transformation Agency, including a 10-minute foundations pack, short standalone modules and tools for guiding teams.
- AI Insights – SES Capability Series - videos featuring expert facilitators and leaders exploring culture, responsible adoption and leading in an AI-enabled APS.
You don't have to learn everything at once
Watching one short video, attending one session, or signing up for the newsletter - any of these is a meaningful step. The skills you build now will help you work more confidently and effectively as AI continues to evolve across the APS.
Pick the option that fits your time, your confidence level, and your curiosity - and start from there.
