There are huge emerging opportunities for the APS to use data and technology more effectively to deliver outstanding services and advice. SES increasingly require higher levels of data literacy and a deeper understanding of the latest data analytic approaches than in the past.

Designed for leaders operating in an increasingly complex and data-rich environment, Data for SES Leaders equips senior and emerging APS leaders with the mindset and capability to lead more confidently.

The course is pitched at SES officers at all levels, working in policy, regulatory, corporate, service delivery and other roles. The aim of the course is to build a data driven culture and to maximise the value of public sector data through greater use and re-use.

Participants will develop the skills to identify relevant data, interrogate evidence, challenge assumptions, and make transparent, defensible decisions.

This learning experience has been created by the AGSM @ UNSW Business School in partnership with the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Participant benefits

  • Apply evidence-based reasoning and critical inquiry to complex public sector challenges.
  • Interpret and communicate data insights clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
  • Foster a data-literate culture by modelling good data practices and supporting team capability development.
  • Identify and mitigate data-related risks including privacy breaches, regulatory non-compliance, and reputational damage while fostering innovation without excessive risk aversion.
  • Evaluate data quality, security practices, and governance frameworks to ask critical questions, understand regulatory requirements for different data types, and enable effective cross-agency collaboration.
  • Build data-literate, accountable teams by setting clear expectations for ethical data use, establishing reporting mechanisms for concerns, and removing barriers to responsible data-driven decision-making.

Suitable for

SES Band 1 - SES Band 3. EL 2 staff will only be considered under extenuating circumstances.

Considerations

  • The course comprises of seven modules, delivered across seven weeks via a mix of self-paced e-learning, live webinars, and application tasks. The first module considers the fundamental question of why data matters and how to get value from it. Six Further modules include pertinent topics such as: Emerging Data and Best Practices, Quality Assurance, Data Driven Decision Making, Risk Management & Governance.
  • Curated online learning, delivered via self-paced modules and a customised learning management system, will introduce and enforce key concepts. Live webinar discussion will feature case studies and real-world examples focussed on the practical elements of how to think about and use data well, enabling you to lead data driven teams.
  • The final week consists of a dedicated Q&A session, facilitated by both program experts and UNSW Adjunct Faculty, to wrap up the program. This provides participants with an opportunity to drive conversation and discuss how the concepts and approaches explored throughout the program apply to their roles and the broader SES context.
