The APS Graduate Development Program
The Australian Public Service Graduate Development Program (APS GDP) is specifically designed for new graduate employees within the Australian Public Service (APS).
The Program focuses on:
- developing each graduate’s sense of identity as a public servant
- building their skills in, and knowledge of, the craft required to work effectively in the APS.
The purpose of the Program is to develop the foundational skills, behaviours, mindsets and networks that support new graduate employees to make a significant contribution as future leaders in the APS.
Program delivery
The Program is delivered using cohort-based social learning methodologies that combines learning in synchronous and asynchronous modes. This approach aligns with the principles of the APS Continuous Learning Model.
Synchronous learning experiences involve real-time interaction between graduates and facilitators, such as through their live learning webinars and the Whole-of-APS Event Series. Asynchronous learning experiences on the other hand, allow graduates to complete coursework and assignments on their own schedule, without the need for real-time interaction.
Social cohort-based program
Graduates participate in a variety of learning opportunities underpinned by cohort-based social learning principles and practices. As a year-group, the Graduate cohort moves through the program at the same pace. Graduates are given access to information and resources to support effective work-integrated learning, including small scale project-based group work.
Learning formats
A variety of learning formats are used to deliver the program. Formats vary in levels of intensity and duration. Examples include live-learning webinars, case studies, and collaborative projects. Some formats require the graduates to work independently and others in small groups of their peers.
Individual coaching and peer networks
Graduates also have access to up to 3 individual coaching sessions and additional opportunities to develop peer networks throughout the program.
