Lunch and Learn - An introduction to Multi-agent Systems
Generative and agentic systems have emerged as key tools to provide meaningful productivity gains across a wide range of application areas, including within government. As the uses for these tools increase in complexity, developing a single agent that has all of the required capabilities becomes increasingly difficult.
Multi-agent systems are one way of managing this complexity. In this session*, we will outline what a multi-agent system is, when to use them and how to determine the most appropriate way of doing so. By attending this unit, participants will understand the current state of the art in context management, tool handling and human-in-the-loop agentic orchestration. While this course does not provide a deep-dive into technical implementation of these systems, it will arm attendees with enough information to get underway in the space.

Presenter
Dr Nathan Brewer, Deloitte
Dr Nathan Brewer has been an AI leader in the Engineering practice at Deloitte Australia. With a strong academic and practical background in advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, Nathan has a deep understanding of the importance of data in decision making in a variety of contexts. He has 15 years of experience managing practical end-to-end AI & data science projects, from handling complex data extraction and preparation to applying state of the art machine learning techniques to producing meaningful and practical visualisations. Additionally, he has practical experience with understanding and managing the risks and ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI.
Nathan specialises in applying AI and Machine Learning techniques within public sector organisations, with a keen focus on identifying opportunities for AI to provide real value. Nathan’s broad experience across AI and Machine Learning gives him insights into the far-reaching aspects of the discipline. As Agentic and Generative AI has emerged as a key tool across industries, Nathan has worked to understand how to apply these tools safely and appropriately, balancing good governance and ethical use against meaningful outcomes.
