By Kris Buckley, AI Capability, APS Academy
The APS Academy has launched AI Foundations for senior leaders, a new workshop designed specifically for SES and EL2 leaders - and registrations are now open.
Senior leaders set the tone for how their teams approach AI. Whether you are a comfortable with AI but unsure of use in the APS environment, or still finding your footing with this emerging technology - this workshop meets you where you are and gives you what you need to lead with clarity and confidence.
Developed in partnership with APS AI subject matter experts, this 5.5-hour face-to-face workshop is a hands-on, interactive experience built for busy senior leaders. It goes beyond the basics to give you the practical knowledge, tools and confidence to lead your teams through one of the most significant shifts in how government works.
What you will cover
Through guided discussions, live activities and real APS case studies, the workshop will help you:
- Understand AI fundamentals — how generative AI actually works, what makes it different from traditional software, and what that means in an APS context
- Build hands-on confidence — practise prompting techniques using enterprise AI tools like Copilot, with activities designed around real senior leader scenarios
- Navigate the risk landscape — explore the key risks of AI use, including accuracy, privacy, bias and security, and what leaders can do about them
- Understand your governance obligations — get across the APS AI Policy, AI Ethics Principles, and what is expected of Accountable Officials and Chief AI Officers
- Learn from a practitioner — hear directly from a leader who has recently worked through an AI use case journey in government.
Where does this fit in your learning?
This workshop is part of a curated AI learning pathway for SES leaders. If you have not yet started your AI journey, complete the AI in Government Fundamentals course as your entry point before attending.
How to register
AI Foundations for senior leaders (for SES and EL2) is available now through APSLearn, and can be delivered for mixed-agency cohorts or within a single agency.
