By the Education team at Climate Action in Government Operations (CAIGO) at the Department of Finance
Imagine having the chance to deepen your understanding of the challenges involved in the Government's transition to a green economy. An opportunity to participate in Greening Government microcredential training could lead to a nationally focused and internationally aligned certification.
The Department of Finance, in conjunction with Commonwealth departments and industry bodies are working with RMIT Online to design and pilot 2 Greening Government Microcredentials. The pilot was made possible with a funding injection from the APS Capability Reinvestment Fund 2024-25. The microcredentials will be developed at the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 3 and will be awarded as a digital badge.
The Australian Government is committed to acting on climate change in its own operations. APS Net Zero 2030 is the Australian Government’s target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions from government operations by 2030.
The Department of Finance is responsible for leading the APS Net Zero by 2030 commitment, reinstating greenhouse gas emissions reporting for Australian Government operations, and introducing climate disclosure requirements for all Commonwealth entities and companies.
The Climate Action in Government Operations Unit are developing a training program covering the strategies, policies, legislation, and targets associated with the Government's emissions reduction goals. The microcredential project will build on the Training Program, and materials from key partners, to offer comprehensive guidance on implementing net zero initiatives. Each APS employee, who works to serve the community, has a role to play in implementing and achieving APS Net Zero 2030 targets.

Microcredentials are concise, stackable certifications that validate specific skills or competencies, enabling you to quickly acquire new professional skills. APS staff dedicate significant time each year to completing both mandatory and voluntary training. Engaging in a microcredential is a valuable commitment that can significantly uplift your capabilities.
The microcredentials aim to enhance climate literacy across the APS and rapidly advance the Government's capability to meet its climate and sustainability commitments. The courses will focus on the skills necessary for the practical implementation of measures across the APS.
The microcredentials will be piloted in mid 2025
