Using AI effectively and ethically however requires support with the right tools, guidance, and a secure space to experiment and share ideas.
That’s where GovAI can help.
GovAI is an APS-only service designed to help public servants learn about and use AI in practical, responsible and collaborative ways. Operated by the Department of Finance, GovAI enables experimentation, upskilling and innovation within a trusted, secure environment.
No matter your experience level - whether you’re just starting out or already working with digital tools - GovAI provides a safe way to explore how AI can help you and your agency work more productively.
What GovAI offers
GovAI is available to all APS employees with GovTEAMS credentials. If you’re not already on GovTEAMS, find out you can register. GovAI offers 3 key service areas:
- Learn about AI: Access hands-on training and curated guidance through the Knowledge Hub, explore a catalogue of AI Apps, and browse the Use Case Library - all tailored to the needs of the APS.
- Collaborate with the APS: Connect with colleagues across government through a dedicated collaboration space. Share ideas, learn from others’ experiences, and co-develop real AI use cases.
- Build with GovAI: Develop and test your own use cases in a secure, purpose-built sandbox environment designed for safe experimentation.
Why it matters
AI can help APS staff work even more productively by freeing up time, allowing us to focus on the areas where we can add the greatest value - enhancing the high standard of service we provide to the Australian community.
GovAI allows the APS to experiment and learn with the right safeguards in place, making it easier to realise the benefits of AI while protecting public trust.
It also supports the Australian Government’s broader strategy to uplift digital capability across the APS, fostering innovation, reducing duplication and building stronger governance around emerging technology.
Using AI responsibly is critical. It’s important to always use GovAI services in line with the Policy for Responsible use of AI in Government and all relevant departmental policies.

GovAI is open to any APS employee with access to GovTEAMS. Just log in at govai.gov.au to start exploring. If your agency hasn’t joined GovTEAMS yet, speak to your IT or HR team about how to opt-in.
