Data plays a critical role in informing government decisions, shaping policy, and improving services for the Australian community. As custodians of significant public sector data holdings, APS agencies have a responsibility to manage information in a way that is secure, ethical and fit for purpose. Developing data literacy across the workforce helps strengthen confidence in how data is used to support evidence-based decision-making and deliver better outcomes for people and businesses.

The APS Foundational Data Literacy Pathway brings together a curated collection of learning resources designed to help build foundational data capability across the APS. Suitable for employees at all levels, the pathway supports individuals to develop their understanding of data concepts, governance, legislation, practical application and data-informed decision-making.

Structured across five key learning areas, the pathway provides flexible access to a range of resources including courses, videos, tools, templates and articles. Learners can tailor their development journey based on their role, experience and professional goals, using the pathway alongside the APS Data Capability Framework to identify capability strengths and areas for growth.

Participant benefits

  • strengthen their understanding of foundational data concepts and principles
  • build confidence in working with, interpreting and using data responsibly
  • increase awareness of data governance, legislation and government frameworks
  • develop practical skills to support evidence-based decision-making
  • identify opportunities to grow their data capability through structured learning resources
