MasterCraft Series – Network Management and Government

Network management is an emerging way for managers to collaborate for service delivery, information exchange and innovation. Because it is cross-sector and cross-boundary, network management involves collaboration and must be organised differently. Accountability is linked to negotiated agreements with diverse actors over whom there is little leverage or direct control, and new distributed models of leadership are required that transcend traditional ‘command and control’ styles. Connections are through contracts and contacts that may be ad hoc, horizontal relationships of reciprocal trust and mutual accountability. The challenge for managers is to ride the boundaries, to be resourceful, innovative, and intentional.

This masterclass workshop will provide participants with the fundamentals of network management, including an understanding of:

  • The basics of networks and their characteristics
  • The characteristics of networks through a Systems Thinking lens
  • Network behaviours as a complex adaptive system.
