MasterCraft Series – JMI Futures - The where, what and how of automation and AI in governments
We will explore findings from a major mapping of automation across state and local governments in NSW, and draw key lessons for developing Australian AI governance frameworks.
Presenter
Professor Kimberlee Weatherall
Kimberlee is a Professor of Law at the University of Sydney with more than 20 years experience researching and advising on the regulation of technology. Her current focus is on automated decision-making systems and artificial intelligence. She is a research leader within the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, a multi-university, multi-disciplinary research body with more than 80 active researchers focused on questions at the intersections between society and automated technologies, where she co-leads projects on the governance of AI, and a new project on synthetic data and generative agents for modelling multi-stakeholder decision-making.
Professor Weatherall is also a Fellow of, and collaborator with the Gradient Institute, an independent data science research institute dedicated to developing ethical AI. In 2024, she was appointed to the Commonwealth Government's AI Expert Group. She has given evidence to a range of Parliamentary Committees at a state and federal level on questions at the intersection of law, governance, and artificial intelligence and automation. In 2023, Kimberlee led a major multidisciplinary research project, in partnership with the NSW Ombudsman’s office, into the development and deployment of automated decision-making across NSW at the state and local government levels.
