MasterCraft Series - Demystifying intelligence in the Australian context
Demystifying intelligence in the Australian context: what is it, how does it work and how can it help?
Intelligence has an increasing role in the pursuit of Australia’s national security policy priorities. But the functions of the National Intelligence Community and how it can be of assistance to policy-makers and operators is not well understood inside or outside of government. As we approach a period of heightened geopolitical tension in our region, that needs to change; intelligence needs to come out of the shadows so it can be better harnessed by government in the pursuit of the national interest.
In this MasterClass, Tom Nicholls from ONI will give an overview of what intelligence is, how it operates in Australia, how it can be useful for practitioners (as well as common pitfalls), will provide a deep-dive on assessments, and provide some tips on how best to work with the intelligence community in the pursuit of joint goals.
Presenter
Tom Nicholls is the Assistant Director-General for ONI’s Analytical Tradecraft and Product Branch, which has responsibility for current intelligence, analytical contestability, customer engagement and coordination of outreach to businesses, universities and think tanks. Tom is also responsible for the National Intelligence Academy, which supports the National Intelligence Community by developing core and common professional intelligence skills, with a particular focus on analysts and their tradecraft. Tom commenced with the then Office of National Assessments in 2012, serving first as a Director in the Open Source Centre and then as the Office’s senior liaison officer in London from 2016 to 2020. Prior to this, he held various national security roles within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
