MasterCraft Series: Small vs Big Government
This Small Versus Big Government masterclass discusses the role of government and how it creates public value.
Over time, the Australian public service has reshaped in line with reforms and changes in priority. Early reform questioned the role of government and how it was pushed to introduce private sector and market notions into public sector administration. This paradigm focused on efficiency, downsizing and market-led approaches such as user pay, privatisation and public private partnerships, presenting government as standing in the way of ‘business’ – thus the promotion of a paradigm of ‘small government’. Conversely, ‘big’ government describes a paradigm of excessively bureaucratic and bloated ecosystems, over-reaching in involvement in matters of public administration.
This ongoing focus on ‘big’ or ‘small’ government fails to acknowledge the extensive capability and capacity already at play within the public sector to drive efficiency, effectiveness and innovation. As such, a new wave of thinking is moving from the debate over big and small and considering more importantly the role of Government in creating enduring public value.
This MasterCraft Series event will:
- Explore the narrative of the role of Government within the economy - including notions of ‘big’ and ‘small’ government.
- Detail the concept of public value and how it provides a way to promote more meaningful public sector reform and innovation.
